First Impressions Matter

Everyone aspires to be successful, both professionally and personally, no matter what the goal.

Let’s be honest! We check out every person we come across, and within seconds of meeting them, our mind races off like the flashing camera, making perceptions in our head, just based on what we see. We begin to think, “Who is this person?” “Is he or she friendly, hostile, capable, deserving, smart?” We even wonder, "Can I trust him or her!"

Now take a pause and think, “Are not others making perceptions about you too?”

Building Trust Through Image Management

After your first interaction with new people you meet, you tend to perceive them based on the image you have created in your mind. Your conversation that follows just re-confirms if this perception is true or not. For example, if you meet someone new at the college library, you may think of him or her as someone who loves to read. Therefore, your first interaction might be about a famous book you may have read in the past. Something that co-relates. The response you seek could just be to re-confirm if your perception made about this person is true or not.

The Power of Perception

Another way to understand the power of perception is by trying this exercise. Close your eyes and think of someone you know from your circle of acquaintances. Now put an adjective to this person. For example, when I recall a particular friend from college, I think of her as ‘witty’. Likewise, when you meet someone new, you tend to recall the image that you have created in your mind about them, long after they have left the room. The question here is: "What image are YOU creating in the minds of others?".

Wanting to Be Perceived Right

Being perceived positively is important! Particularly, if you are meeting someone who will be responsible for the realization of your goals, such as, an interviewer at the firm who is hiring or a new boss you are working for, or a prospective suitor for marriage or the person you are meeting on a first date. It might also be important if you are trying to gain acceptance as part of a circle or group in college or a club, or maybe you want to be perceived right just to create an edge over others. As Zig Ziglar said, “If people like you, they’ll listen to you, but if they trust you, they’ll do business with you.” Being perceived right to build trust is important. It’s as simple as that!

Enhancing Your Self-Image and Communication Skills

First impressions or outward appearances play an important role in building trust and helping you achieve success. Your clothing, the way you groom yourself, your attitude, behaviour and habits, your etiquette, and body language are all external elements that can speak volumes about you. So, it’s all about what you communicate visually even before you speak. And in today’s scenario, with so much competition around you, it is important to make it a positive one! This is where image management, confidence, and self-image come into play. With the help of Barros Image Consultancy, you can learn communication skills, etiquette, and undergo training and development that will help you present your best self. Plus, you’ll always have the opportunity to learn something new and continue to grow.
