Confidence is not something you develop overnight, but it is attainable. Confidence grows gradually with practice, just like other qualities, talents, or skills you possess. While some of us are born with certain skills, others develop it gradually over time. However, many do not showcase their qualities or the talents they possess, or the skill-sets they know because of past experiences. For instance, if you were told as a child not to go near fire for fear of burning your fingers, then, cooking might not be your strong point today. Similarly, if you fell off a bicycle several times as a kid, it might take some encouragement for you to ride a bike as you grow older. The same applies to the fear of public speaking. It could mean either you were not exposed to speaking in public during childhood, or you may have had a bad experience in the past that still makes you nervous while speaking to a crowd.
The good news is that you can still become a great cook, an efficient rider, or a confident public speaker. All this can happen gradually with regular practice and guidance. There are numerous inspirational stories that can give you confidence and transform you. However, There is no magic potion here. Studies tell us that if you visualize what you want to be and repeat it daily with action or practice, you will achieve your goal. It is about having a dream, believing in it, and then trusting yourself completely, with all the power within yourself. Nothing can stop you if you know you can.
To believe in yourself, you first need to love yourself and accept who you are completely, both your strengths and flaws. No one is born perfect, and that's okay! As quoted by Albert Einstein: “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” Just because you know someone who is exceptionally good at public speaking, it doesn’t mean you are less skilled or talented. You might excel at other things such as, organizing events or writing creatively. Therefore, ignore the voices in your head that pull you down. Focus on building your strengths and targeting areas where you want to improve, one by one. Yes, you can become a good public speaker too, with practice. So, go ahead and acknowledge the areas you want to improve on and take responsibility to do your best. This is the power you have within you. It all starts with you.
